From Ancient Times to the Digital Era

Hello Auction Enthusiasts! 🏺💻 Welcome to the inaugural blog post on Michael's Auction House! Today, we are exploring the rich history of auction houses and their evolution throughout the centuries.
Ancient Beginnings
Did you know that the first recorded auction dates back to 500 B.C. in Babylon? Back then, auctions were used for some pretty shocking stuff—like selling women for marriage! Thankfully, things have changed a lot since then!
The Roman Influence
Fast forward to ancient Rome, where auctions were all about selling war spoils and household goods. Roman soldiers auctioned off their loot, and the highest bidder took home the prize. That’s where we get the word “auction”—from the Latin word auctio, meaning “increase.”
Medieval and Renaissance Auctions
In the medieval period, auctions fell out of favour but made a comeback during the Renaissance. Art and rare books became hot auction items, with wealthy patrons vying to own the most dazzling pieces.
The Modern Auction House
The first modern auction house, Stockholms Auktionsverk, was established in Sweden in 1674. This was followed by the famous Sotheby’s in 1744 and Christie’s in 1766. These giants set the gold standard for auctions, focusing on art, antiques, and rare collectibles.
The Digital Revolution
Today, the auction world has been revolutionized by technology. Online auctions mean you can join the bidding fun from anywhere in the world, all from the comfort of your couch. Platforms like eBay and specialized auction sites have democratized the process, opening up the market to a global audience.
